MARKET ESSENTIALS

01 / INSIGHT

Two currencies, one quote

In EUR/USD, EUR is the base currency and USD is the quote currency. The price expresses how many units of the quote currency equal one unit of the base currency. A rising quote means the base currency has strengthened relative to the quote currency.

Bid, ask and spread

Markets typically display bid and ask prices; the difference is the spread. Spreads can change with liquidity, market events and trading sessions. Commissions and other charges may also apply. Check which side of the quote is relevant to your transaction.

Put prices in context

Central bank policy, inflation, employment and economic activity can influence exchange rates. Prices may move quickly around announcements. A trading plan should account for product rules, liquidity and your own capacity for loss.

Forex and leveraged trading involve significant risk. You may lose your invested capital. This website provides general information, not investment advice.
